Work on the project commenced on June 3, 2022, funded by contributions from the Chetwynd Public Library Association, local businesses, government bodies, granting agencies, and community members. This support is an example of shared dedication to improving education and literacy throughout Chetwynd and its neighboring areas.
The longstanding library has been a cherished part of the Chetwynd community, offering various services and programs since its establishment in 1959. In response to requests from the District of Chetwynd and the Chetwynd Library Board in 2016, the PRRD explored options for repairing or replacing the facility.
This initiative led to the establishment of the current Library Advisory Committee and a study recommending the construction of a new building. Following a thorough analysis and a three-year process of public engagement, construction commenced with Faction Projects Inc. (formerly known as Field Lievers Architecture) partnering with Celtic Construction on the project.
"The Chetwynd Library is a symbol of community collaboration and reflects the community’s commitment to development in the Peace River region," said PRRD Director Dan Rose of Electoral Area E. "With generous local support, the Library Board has created a welcoming new space for community gatherings and learning. Like many other facilities, this was made possible through the power of partnerships."
The newly completed 8,600 square-foot facility includes essential improvements in storage and accessibility, designed to meet present and future community needs. Alongside the existing cherished services and spaces, the upgraded library features a dedicated storytelling area, a room for children’s programs, a teen seating area, a maker space, a virtual reality room, a multi-purpose area, and an outdoor patio with views of the nearby skate park.
Visitors to the revamped Chetwynd Public Library can also enjoy a café with a spacious 20-person seating area and food preparation facilities.
