Site C has it’s first generating unit come into service

Updated: Nov 16

The required testing and commissioning process has been completed and the first of six generating units has come into service according to BC Hydro.

One by one the remaining generating units will begin operation, with each unit providing more than 180 megawatts of power to BC Hydro Customers according to their website.

All six of the generating units are expected to be operational by the fall of 2025, and once complete, Site C will produce nearly 5,100 gigawatt hours of electricity annually while adding roughly eight percent more supply to British Columbia’s power grid.

The elevation at the dam site has now reached the required level to start up the generating units as the reservoir is now more than 90 percent filled.

The water level at the dam has risen about 40 meters since filling commenced in late August according toa media release from BC Hydro.

Testing and commissioning activities for the second generating unit are currently in progress.

BC Hydro strongly advises the public to avoid the reservoir area during the filling process and for at least one year after it is completed.
