Tourmaline reported that there had been a fire in a remote area at its Gundy C-60 gas plant site on April 14, resulting in a workers death.
One contract worker has tragically died from injuries sustained during the incident according to an update on the Tourmaline website, while another is currently receiving treatment in hospital for their injuries.
“We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of the individuals,” read the update.
At around 6 p.m on Monday, April 14, a fire broke out at the Tourmaline Gundy c-60 gas plant site after a pipe was struck during work activities according to British Columbia Enery Regulator’s update on their website.
Tourmaline quickly initiated its emergency response plan, securing the affected area and contacting all individuals to inform them of the incident within that area.
The fire was fully extinguished early April 15, while the plant was secured with no ongoing risk to public safety or the environment.
BCER Compliance and Enforcement Officers attended the site overnight and are continuing to oversee the company’s implementation of its emergency response plan. RCMP and WorkSafeBC are also engaged in the ongoing investigation.
The plant has sustained no damage and remains closed during the ongoing investigation. Tourmaline stated in their update that their foremost priority is the safety and well-being of personnel on site, as well as minimizing any potential environmental risks.
Tourmaline is collaborating with the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out to determine the cause of the incident.
