Throughout the month of May, the BC Highway Patrol holds their motorcycle safety campaign.
According to the BC Highway Patrol June, July, and August are the most dangerous months for motorcycles with an average of 2400 collisions.
The BC Highway Patrol will have all of their patrol officers on hand between May 17 to May 21, according their website to help prevent collisions and fatalities throughout British Columbia.
“We need to work together to eliminate fatal collisions, if you see someone driving or riding while distracted, excessively speeding, or if you suspect a driver or rider is impaired, please document the license plate, if possible, and call your local police,” says Corporal Melissa Jongema, BC Highway Patrol Media Relations Officer. “Let’s ride to stay alive and to arrive safely to our long weekend destinations.”
A few tips for being a safer rider this May are:
· If your bike was put away for the winter, practice riding before going on any longer rides.
· Drive sober, take breaks often, and always have the right gear to be prepared for all types of weather.
· Scan every intersection before entering and make sure to slow down.
· Avoid riding in poor weather and wear visible clothing when riding in the dark.
