Nolan Douglas Schmidt, 23, is now facing multiple new charges after he was charged with second-degree murder following a shooting in the city on Sunday, January 19.

Dawson Creek RCMP responded to a report of shots fired on 102nd Avenue on Sunday, January 19, shortly after 11:00 PM.

Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male deceased at the scene.

While investigating, police received a second report of gunfire at a nearby hotel, where they found another individual with non-life-threatening injuries. The injured person was transported to the hospital for treatment according to the release.

Authorities have confirmed that this was not a random attack, as the individuals involved were acquainted. Investigators are also reviewing other ongoing cases in the Dawson Creek area, with progress continuing to be made.

“The surge of resources that supported the investigation contributed to an arrest and subsequent charge approval. Additional charges may be possible if supported by further evidence as the investigation moves forward,” said Superintendent Sanjaya Wijayakoon of E Division Major Crime.

More charges have been laid against Nolan Douglas Schmidt, 23, who has been charged with aggravated assault and discharging a firearm with intent in connection to the shooting at the Mile Zero Apartment Hotel in Dawson Creek on January 19, 2025.
