MLA Dan Davies plan to run as an independent candidate

Dan Davies, the current MLA for Peace River North, declared his intention to run as an independent candidate in the next provincial election at a recent press conference.

Davies held a press conference at his campaign office in Fort St. John on September 5, announcing his plan to run as an independent and progressive conservative candidate, as well as the next steps for his re-election campaign.

“I want to thank everyone in Peace River North for their outpouring of support over the past week, and for encouraging me to continue my campaign because they support an independent voice for the north, and want to elect a capable, caring, and compassionate MLA who brings experience and stability to the Legislature,” said Davies in a press release on September 5.

This announcement comes on the heels of the surprise collapse of the BC United Party, which was announced by the BC United Leader Kevin Falcon on August 28. Until then, Davies had planned to run for re-election alongside other BC United Candidates this October.

“Obviously I was very surprised with Kevin Falkon’s announcement, and I’m very disappointed in Kevin’s decision, as we were not consulted. Literally, I found out about this announcement on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), as did all my colleagues. Just not the way that things should be done,” said Davies. “As an independent, I have committed to continuing to represent this riding, and this now gives me absolute free reign to represent and to speak on the issues in this riding. I will commit to working with whatever party that is in power, to make sure that Peace River North gets its fair share.”

MLA Dan Davies is currently the Shadow Minister for Rural and Social Development, Poverty Reduction, and Shadow Minister of Education. He was first elected MLA for Peace River North in 2017, and again in 2020.

“I got into politics to make life better for families and businesses in the North Peace and Northern Rockies. My priorities are the same, and my principles haven’t changed,” said Davies in a press release. “This election is an opportunity for the people of the North Peace and Northern Rockies to rise above the contentious and divisive politics of the last seven years, and of the last seven days, and focus on electing the best representative for the job.”

Davies will be running against Conservative Jordan Kealy in the BC Provincial Election, while MLA Mike Bernier announced his plan to run as an independent against Larry Neufeld in the South Peace.
