Two individuals traveling to the Redfern Lake trail for work encountered a man walking toward them, and upon approaching they identified him as Sam Benastick.

The two individuals transported Sam to the hospital, where police arrived and confirmed that he was the man who had been reported missing.

According to the RCMP media release Benastick informed police that he initially stayed in his car for a couple of days before walking to a creek near a mountainside, where he camped for 10 to 15 days.

Benastick is an experienced hiker and camper and was equipped with a black Osprey backpack, a tarp, and a range of other camping gear.

He then moved down the valley and constructed a camp and shelter in a dried-out creek bed. Eventually, he made his way to the location where he flagged down the two men who brought him to safety.

“Finding Sam alive is the absolute best outcome. After all the time he was missing, it was feared that this was would not be the outcome,” said Cpl Madonna Saunderson, BC RCMP Communications.

Sam Benastick was reported missing on October 19, after failing to return from a camping trip in Redfern-Keily Park, located off Highway 97 near the Sikanni Chief area.

Various resources had been deployed, including the Police Dog Services Unit and Search and Rescue teams to aid in locating him according to RCMP.
